Our Story

Building Futures

Forest Avenue Outreach was founded with a simple belief: that every young person—no matter their zip code—deserves the opportunity to build a strong, sustainable future. What began as a community garden in Des Moines’ King-Irving neighborhood has grown into a workforce development powerhouse, connecting youth to careers in the skilled trades through nationally recognized training, mentorship, and union partnerships.

We’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of hands-on learning, and we’re proud to walk alongside our students as they plant the seeds of a new future—on the job site, in the classroom, and in life.

Our Mission

Forest Avenue Outreach empowers youth and strengthens communities by providing hands-on, future-ready workforce training and holistic support. Through our nationally recognized pre-apprenticeship program and deep partnerships with state and regional unions, we equip young people with the skills, certifications, and confidence needed to thrive in 21st-century careers, especially in the skilled trades. Our mission is to break down systemic barriers and cultivate pathways to prosperity, one young person at a time.

Our Vision

We envision a future where every young person has the opportunity, support, and skills to build a prosperous life, no matter their starting point. Through equitable access to hands-on training, meaningful mentorship, and union-connected career pathways, we’re creating a generation of empowered leaders, builders, and changemakers.

Hands-on training. Life-changing impact.

What We Do

Our signature program, Pathways to Building Trades, is a paid summer pre-apprenticeship experience for youth ages 16–20. Students receive 120+ hours of training based on the nationally recognized Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3), including certifications in OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid.

Alongside classroom learning, students visit over 50 union training centers and industry partners, gaining real-world exposure, guidance, and mentorship.

Whether they enter a registered apprenticeship or continue their education, our students leave prepared, confident, and connected.
